  • Terror emails 'mystery solved', 20 held for serial bombings

NAT81National/Technology/TerrorismTerror emails 'mystery solved', 20 held for serial bombingsMumbai, Oct 6 IANS In a major breakthrough, Mumbai Police Monday claimed to have solved the mystery behind the terror emails sent by the Indian Mujahideen IM prior to the Ahmedabad and New Delhi serial blasts. Police Commissioner Hasan Gafoor said here the three techies who had sent the emails have been arrested, as also 17 others who were responsible for a string of terror bombings in different cities.Preliminary interrogation of all the accused has brought out the chilling revelation that they planned to carry out bomb blasts here during the ongoing Navratri festival, Gafoor said at a press conference that was telecast live by a number of TV news channels. The initial breakthrough came on September 23 when five alleged terrorists owing allegiance to IM were arrested in and around Mumbai. Over the past 12 days, 15 more IM activists, most of them highly educated, were arrested from different cities, pushing the number of those held to 20, Gafoor said. The three techies were arrested Sunday. They have been identified as Mohammed Mansoor Asghar Peerbhoy, alias Munna 31, working as a principal software engineer in an MNC on a salary of Rs.1.9 million per annum; Salman Kadar Shaikh alias Mobin 24, working as a senior technical advisor in an IT firm; and Asif Bashiruddin Shaikh 22, a mechanical engineer. The emails were sent from three locations - Sanpada suburb of Navi Mumbai, Khalsa College, Matunga, and a private company in Chembur, both Mumbai suburbs, using the Wi-Fi. Among those nabbed in the operations carried out jointly with the police of different states are 10 IM activists who planted the explosives in Ahmedabad and Surat. They had travelled from Karnataka to Pune and then to Surat and Ahmedabad with the explosives, Gafoor said. All those arrested are highly educated and are aged between 20 and 35. They were picked up from Azamgarh, in Uttar Pradesh, Pune in Maharashtra, in and around Mangalore in Karnataka, and from Kochi in Kerala, Joint Police Commissioner Crime Rakesh Maria said. The IM has majorly spread its tentacles all over the country and the investigating agencies are now attempting to identify all its operatives and neutralize their nefarious intentions, Maria said. The arrested men had revealed that they have been involved in all the bomb blasts in India since 2005, he added.According to Maria, the three software experts visited Mumbai five times prior to sending the blast emails and conducted a reccee of the Sion, Chembur, and CST areas in the city and in Sanpada in Navi Mumbai, where they could hack into wi-fi connections available. They were instructed to send the emails a few minutes before the blasts in Ahmedabad and Delhi, which they did on the dot, Gafoor said. The terrorists were financed through the 'hawala' route, Gafoor added.Prior to the Ahmedabad blasts, the techies came from Pune to Mumbai in a blue Maruti Esteem and sent the emails using the Wi-Fi connection of the residential Internet of an American software professional Kenneth Haywood in Sanpada, Navi Mumbai. Mohammed Akbar Ismail Choudhary 28, a computer hardware expert who doubles as a driver, has also been nabbed, Gafoor said. The police said that unlike a previous group arrested Sep 24, none of the 20 now held are linked to the 7/11 Mumbai suburban train serial blasts of 2006.The police also released a list of the 20 arrested men along with their antecedents. Among them are: * Dastagir Feroze Mujawar 25, alias Afrosh, a commerce graduate who has been training youth in Jehadi activities,* Mohammed Atik Mohammed Iqbal 25, a computer science graduate and an active member of IM terror modules,* Anique Shafique Syed 27, who runs a computer and mobile retail shop and was actively involved in the Surat and Ahmedabad blasts,* Majid Akthar Shaikh 26, who runs a mobile phone repairs and servicing shop and is an active member of IM terror modules, * Yasir Anis Syed 20, alias Huzefa, runs a computer and mobile reparing shop, active member of IM and accused of criminal conspiracy,* Syed Mohammed Naushad, 25, alias Sayedna, a civil works contractor based in Mangalore who was involved in planting the Surat bombs, * Javed Mohammed Ali, 19, an Islamic studies scholar active with IM terror modules,* Farooq Sharifuddin Tarkash 25 alias Abdullah, a computer science graduate, member of IM terror modules and was trained by Riyaz Bhatkal in Karnataka.* Mohammed Ali Ahmed, 44, a civilian works contractor from Mangalore, who also runs a safe house for IM members,* Ahmed Bawa Abubakar 33, alias Abu, a farmer by profession, nabbed for his role in Surat and Ahmedabad, and* Faisal-e-Rehma Muskhan Durrani 23, a robber on police records, also involved in Surat and Ahmedabad.Without stating their antecedents, the police named the five men arrested Sept 23 from in and around Mumbai, as: Mohammed Mutalib Usmani, Mohammed Sadik Israr Ahmed Shaikh, Mohammed Arif Badruddin Shaikh, Mohammed Zakir Abdul Haq Shaikh and Ansar Ahmed Badshah Shaikh. Maria announced that in the second round of arrests, the police recovered 10 kg of explosives, one submachine gun, two revolvers, six detonators, two wireless sets, Wi-Fi and RF signal detectors, sleep inducing injections and sleeping tablets, five laptops, six CPUs, three pen-drives and other related hardware.--Indo-Asian News Serviceqn/vm/vt953 Words*06102209

  • Reality TV in Britain: Sadism is entertainment

ENT11Entertainment/Showbiz/SocietyReality TV in Britain: Sadism is entertainmentBy Venkata VemuriLondon, Oct 6 IANS In ancient Rome, ultimate reality entertainment meant watching gladiators kill each other. In Spain, it's still done, but with bulls. In modern Britain, reality television has already reached the threshold of sadism.Channel Five has now been accused of crossing the sane borders of entertainment into sadism with its weekly reality show "Unbreakable", to be telecast from Tuesday night. The contestants are buried alive, trapped in a tent full of gas and made to wade through piranha-infested water. They are also subjected to waterboarding, a torture technique said to be used by America's Central Intelligence Agency CIA on terror suspects. This involves being tied down on a board, tilted back and having water poured over the face, which recreates the experience of drowning. In another test, their hands and feet are bound and they are dumped in a 15-foot tank of water and forced to leap up and down for air.The motto for "Unbreakable" is Pain is Glory, Pain is Pride, Pain is Great to Watch. The channel's website introduces many painful links. Here's one: “Make or Break: Want to see more pain” Or this: “Best Bits: See where they broke/bailed/choked/threw up#133”The eight volunteers include a musician, a 20-year-old female bouncer and a personal trainer.According to the Daily Mail, which calls "Unbreakable" the most sickening reality show yet, one of the volunteers was so traumatised he had convulsions on the first day of filming, another ran away into the African bush - where it was being shot - and had to be found with tracker dogs. The show's presenter, Benedict Allen, has said he is worried about contestants' safety.“We knew we couldn't afford to kill anyone but yes, there were times when I was seriously worried. It got pretty hairy. Two hours into filming on the first day, one of the contestants collapsed on the floor and suffered convulsions. We were stuck in the depths of jungle in Guyana and we had to get him out. It didn't start well,” he said. The show's producers are not rattled, yet. A Channel Five spokesman said: “All the participants in 'Unbreakable' were aware of the type of the challenges they would face prior to filming. All tests were supervised by experts and the volunteers had mental and physical assessments before the show.”But critics say the content is unacceptable.John Whittingdale, Tory chairman of the media select committee, said: "You have to ask, where is it going to end It seems that scenes of torture are being used as entertainment. What next Reality contestants having electric shock treatment There is a point where such things should not be shown on television.”John Beyer, director of lobby group Mediawatch UK, said the content breaches the code of Ofcom, Britain's broadcasting regulator.“Waterboarding is a form of torture that I believe is illegal under international law and so should not feature in any programme merely as a form of entertainment,” he said.--Indo-Asian News Service ven/sh/jg548 Words06101454

  • Expat Indians in Gulf rally to help India's flood hit

INT32International/Diaspora/DisasterExpat Indians in Gulf rally to help India's flood hitBy Aroonim BhuyanDubai, Oct 6 IANS The large expatriate Indian community in the Gulf is mobilising its resources to provide aid to victims of the floods that hit India's northern and eastern regions last month. In the United Arab Emirates UAE, members of the Indian community have contributed over Rs.14 million $300,000, which would be sent as aid to flood victims in the worst hit states of Bihar and Orissa."We have collected 1.1 million dirhams Rs.14.2 million and hope to get around two million dirhams Rs.25.8 million," Bharatbhai Shah, a prominent Indian businessman and community leader here, told IANS."We have set up a committee of eight members to handle the donations. The committee includes well-known Indian businessmen in Dubai like L.R. Lulla, Vinod Agani, Harish Pawani and K. Kumar," he added.Describing this year's floods in Assam, Bihar and Orissa as no less a disaster than the Kutch earthquake and the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Shah said that he would be leaving for India after the festival of Diwali to take stock of the situation there."I will be going to India after Diwali to take stock of the situation there and also find a credible NGO who can help in our relief work. I will then come back and present the name of the NGO to the committee for approval and after that only we will proceed to India with the money," he said.Among the options the committee is looking at for utilising the funds is building houses for the flood affected people."Each house will cost around Rs.60,000. We are also not ruling out the possibility of adopting a village," Shah said, adding that the committee was not in favour of distributing the money over different places."We would rather concentrate on one place or state as that would yield the maximum benefits. Funds being spread out thinly across different areas will not have the desired effect," he said.Meanwhile, in Oman, the Indian Social Club ISC, under the aegis of the Indian embassy, is organising a fund-raising dinner Oct 11 as part of its efforts to collect donations for the flood affected.Among those who will attend the dinner are film director Prakash Jha, TV personality Shekhar Suman and Bhojpuri actor Manoj Tiwari, according to reports. "The Bihar Flood Relief Committee is in the process of identifying organisations actively involved in relief and rehabilitation programmes," reports quoted ISC chairperson Satish Nambiar as saying. "Our focus will be on rehabilitation. And we plan to raise around 300,000 to 400,000 Omani riyals Rs.49.3 million," he said, adding that Indian schools in Muscat will be actively involved in the fund-raising campaign. Apart from this, the Indian embassy is organising a series of fund raisers in October.India's Ambassador to Oman Anil Wadhwa has also appealed to members of the Indian community to donate a day's salary for the cause.Earlier, from Qatar, members of the Bihar Flood Relief Committee-Qatar BFRC-Q visited Bihar to distribute relief materials collected from Qatar to the flood-affected in that state.BFRC-Q was formed by representatives of Qatar's Indian Community Benevolent Fund, Indian Cultural Centre, Indian Association for Bihar and Jharkhand IABJ other Indian socio-cultural and professional organisations. The team, led by Shakil Ahmed Kakvi, president of IABJ, met Minister for Chemicals, Fertilisers and Steel Ram Vilas Paswan, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and other Bihar government and Red Cross officials during the course of the visit.Of the over 4.8 million expatriate Indians in the Gulf, 420,000 are in Qatar, 500,000 in Oman and 1.5 million in the UAE. --Indo-Asian News Serviceab/sh/mj667 Words*06101309
